By definition, light is “something that makes things visible or affords illumination.” Light helps us to see, it guides us, and it leads us out of darkness.

“And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.” (Genesis‬ ‭1:4‬) God’s light leads us to truth, love, joy, salvation, and it delivers us out of the darkness derived from sin.

Following God’s Light

As I reflect back on my life I am able to recall being around certain people who were really walking in the presence of the Lord, and how they made me feel. In the midst of my seasons of darkness, those radiating in God’s light, brought forth an unexplainable sense of comfort and peace, because God was allowing me to experience His love and His light through His children.

A specific friend who comes to mind when I speak on light is my friend Mitchell. I met him while I was in a season of darkness, and God’s light was very visible within Him. I could clearly see the fruit that he bore, and regardless of the fact that we were far from being equally yoked, he loved me. Mitchell was very intentional when it came to our friendship, and he allowed God to lead him when it came to being my friend. He met me in a season of darkness, but continuously shed light and love into my life whenever he was given the opportunity to. God’s light reached me through Mitchell. Eventually, I started to hang around his community more often, and after a few years I started attending a bible study that he hosted. Again, I was in the presence of God’s light. Today I’m still very much a part of that bible study, and through this bible study I’ve grown so much within community and within my own relationship with Christ. I was drawn to Mitchell because God’s light was evident in Him, and I followed God’s light into a world of clarity.

God’s light has drawn me into a wonderful community, a better life, and into a deeper relationship with Him; for that I will forever be thankful, and I realize that God can utilize each one of us to draw people to Him.

Letting God’s Light Shine Through Us

If we stop and think about Jesus’s commandment to us found in John 13:34 which says,

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” (John‬ ‭13:34‬ ‭ESV‬)

And also reflect on what the fruits of Holy Spirit are:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,” (Galatians‬ ‭5:22‬ ‭ESV‬‬)

Then it becomes apparent that walking in obedience to Jesus’s commandment to love others as he loved us will help us to bear the same fruit as the Spirit. By walking in alignment with God, He shines through us, which means that we will be blessed enough to bless someone else by allowing them to experience God’s love and light through us. That love and light has so much power that even a glimpse of it will lead others to the Lord.

I encourage us all to take some time to sit and reflect on where God’s light has brought us, and what it has revealed to us; then to consider how He calls each of us to bring forth His kingdom. Finally, I want us to take a moment to worship God, and to thank Him for being that light in the darkness, because without Him we would all be lost.
